While mainstream America thinks about football kicking off the fall season, many of us in the horse world associate the next few months with the most competitive equine events of the year. Futurities, world shows, the Congress?there’s no shortage of high-dollar events featuring top-notch horses and riders. And thanks to the Internet, those of us who are stuck at home (working on magazine deadlines) can still keep up with the rides of a lifetime via live feeds from the events.
My personal favorite show started today: The National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity. There’s something really special about these young cow horses, their stellar trainers and non-pro riders, and the crowd that gathers to celebrate the event in Reno each fall. From the trade show to the horse sales to the finals on the closing weekend, it’s a great event full of camaraderie and respect for horses with incredible athletic talent. (They show in the herd work [cutting], reined work [reining], and fence work, all in the same day during the finals.)
What’s your favorite event of the season? Are you a Congress junkie? Are you excited for the APHA and AQHA World Shows? Or is the marquee rodeo event, the National Finals Rodeo, more your style? What do you love about your pick?
