What’s Normal?

As the weather turns your horse, just like you, is more susceptible to infection. If you think he’s come down with a cold, here’s a quick guide to help you assess whether his vital signs are healthy or not.

Slightly irregular vitals indicate he may be fighting something; highly irregular signs mean get him to the vet!

Vital signs for a horse at rest:

Pulse Rate – about 30 to 40 beats per minute

Respiration Rate – between 6 and 20 breaths per minute

Rectal Temperature – between 99.5 and 101.5 ˚F

Capillary Refill Time – (press the gums) 2 seconds or less

Learn how to assess his vital signs by visiting Horse&Rider.com.
