Hot-Weather Horsekeeping

Keep these tips in mind so your horses stay comfortable all summer long.

Groom the ground: Summer’s dry heat can result in hard, compacted arena surfaces. To avoid the risk of concussive injuries to your horses’ legs, keep your footing dragged or otherwise worked up.

Scoop the poop: Fresh manure draws flies, so clean stalls and pens daily. (For more fly-busting tips, review the article “Fly-Control Battle Plan.”)

Provide shade: Shade protects animals from the sun’s rays plus deters biting insects, so make sure your horses have a shady haven of some sort.
