To compete in the main reining and cow horse events, riders had to qualify at previous horse shows, with only 16 spots available for each event.

The Run For A Million
August 17–20, 2022
As you roam the tack and apparel vendors set up near the arena in between events, you might recognize some familiar faces on the concourse. Actors from Yellowstone and 1883 are known to make an appearance during the event, along with camera crews that are filming the latest season of The Last Cowboy.
When the main events aren’t happening, there’s still plenty to watch, including the $150,000 Reining Shoot Out, $30,000 Cowboy Invitational, $50,000 Non Pro Championship, and the Rookie Championship. Plus, the riders competing in The Run For A Million and $170,000 Cow Horse Challenge are known to do autograph signings throughout the show, giving you a chance to meet some of the top riders in the world in person.
If this event is on your bucket list, be sure to buy tickets in advance! The Run For A Million and the $170,000 Cow Horse Challenge have been known to sell out.
More Than Reining
When classes aren’t happening in the arena, there’s more to do outside of it. This year Kimes Ranch held an event called 1. Ranch Songs and Stories that took place after the Cow Horse Challenge in South Point’s Grand View Lounge.
If you don’t want to go very far for a good meal, check out 2. Michael’s Gourmet Room located in the South Point Hotel and Casino. Or if you’re wanting to explore more of Vegas, head to the Strip and go to 3. Catch for a visually stunning food destination.
Less than an hour away is 4. Red Rock Canyon. Go for a hike before heading to the horse show or get your horse fix by checking out 5. Cowboy Trail Rides, where you can choose between a few different rides that vary in length and time of day.
The original concept of The Run For A Million and the reality TV show The Last Cowboy was to introduce more people to the sport reining and get them excited about an event they can watch in person. Since the first event, which took place in 2019, The Run For A Million has grown to feature events beyond reining and continues to introduce the public to different Western disciplines each year.
