Professional’s Choice #9 Gold Shootout: Pam Haar and John Watkins

In a tightly contested Professional’s Choice #9 Gold Shootout, the team of Pam Haar and John Watkins proved steady and sharp, walking away with the win with 157.13 seconds on 30 head in 3 rounds. The sorting team rode to the pay window for a check worth $5,368.

Haar, who’s been sorting since 2013, rode her 5-year-old mare “London,” a daughter of Hashtags she purchased from Sage Bach last October.

“I got her from Sage, and he did all the sorting training on her” Haar shared. “She’s been super.”

Haar was no stranger to the winners circle at the North Central Regional, taking home the #15 3-Man 2-Gate championship with fellow Gold Shootout winner Sage Bach and Baily Coombs.

“I actually pushed another one of my runs out of the short go with our winning run,” Haar said, laughing. “But everybody is a good sport in this game, and my partner there was understanding.”

Haar, who also judges and produces shows in Wyoming, is known for her dedication to the Cinch RSNC family.

“I’m a loyalist. I’ve been to World Finals 11 years, and I’ve only missed two Finals in my time with RSNC. There are a lot of great people in this game.”

Haar is headed to the June 7-14 World Finals this year with not only her string of horses aboard, but a few leased out to international contestants, too. She provided this interview while horseback with a fellow RSNC member, who was trying out her lease horse.

“I lease horses to some of the Australians competing,” Haar said. “I’ve been doing that for about four years, and I have four horses leased out this year. They usually ride for a couple of days beforehand to get a feel for the horse, and then ride them at the Finals.”

Pam Haar on London, and John Watkins riding Tex championed the Professional’s Choice #9 Gold Shootout at the North Central Regional.

Haar’s teammate John Watkins came in on his 9-year-old, Metallic Cat bred mare, “Tex.”

“I hadn’t ridden her in over a month; she’d been off for the winter,” Watkins said. “But Sage got her back in shape, and she felt great.”

With a clean record of 20 head going into the short round, Watkins said he and Haar kept their strategy simple.

“We came in with 20, and there was only one other team that had 20 cows going in. So, our plan was just go in, take what the cows give us, and try and get a time. I think we went in high call, so we just wanted to make sure we didn’t mess up.”

Watkins or his wife, Kiley (winning partner of the Mil+Spec Liner #6/4 Inc) won’t make it to World Finals this year, but their son, Grady, will be there representing the family.

“Grady also placed in the Shootout at the North Central Regional,” Watkins said. “He’ll be heading down with Pam to help out and ride.”

#13 Gold Shootout: Wyatt Anderson and Sage Bach

When it came time for the #13 Gold Shootout, Wyatt Anderson of and Sage Bach turned up the heat and didn’t let off. With 165.23 seconds on 25 head in 3 rounds, the pair cashed in a $5,000 check for the class.

“We ride together a lot, and sometimes we crumble in the short round”, Anderson joked. “So this time we said, ‘Let’s just go for it.’”

Riding his tried-and-true gelding “Boone,” an 8-year-old Anderson has had since he started sorting, the horse-and-rider duo made it count.

“I think I’ve won about $70,000 on him in the last few years,” Anderson said. “I bought him from a cutting trainer, and then Logan Wolfe seasoned him. He’s solid.”

Bach piloted his 6-year-old Metallic Rebel gelding, “Fuego,” a gritty, athletic horse with plenty of personality.

“He’s big and strong, but he’s quick and can really drop and move,” Bach said of the horse. “We knew we had to get about eight [head sorted] to secure second. I said, ‘Let’s go for 10,’ and Wyatt was all in. We weren’t playing it safe.”

Bach has been staying at Haar’s place in Wheatland, Wyoming. There, the ranch sorters are getting horses tuned for the summer run, including five futurity horses headed to Fort Worth for the World Finals.

“We’re getting everything dialed in, including the lease horses”, he said.

Anderson is hoping to make World Finals work, too. But with a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old, 10 days away from home is tough. The family does plan to make it down for the Shootout classes, and will be at the “Big Daddy” ranch sorting in Cheyenne, Wyoming, afterwards to try and bring home more big money.
