In the world of cutting horses, legends aren’t made overnight. They’re born from the dust of working ranches, shaped by patience, precision, and trust—and proven under the bright lights of the show pen.
Among these legends now stands a mare named Kittennish—a horse whose grace, grit, and greatness have rewritten the record books.
With her steady partner, Austin Shepard, in the saddle and Billy Wolf of Wolf Livestock guiding her path, Kittennish has become more than a champion—she’s a symbol of excellence, partnership, and heart.
On Oct. 19, 2025, Kittennish made history, becoming the first mare ever to earn $1 million in Limited Aged Event competition. Her journey to that milestone—marked by triumphs at The Run for a Million, the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular, and The American Performance Horseman—is not just a story of success. It’s a story of belief, bond, and brilliance.
From Bloodlines to Brilliance
Although not technically home-raised, Kittennish’s story is deeply connected to Wolf Livestock’s breeding vision. Purchased as an embryo in 2018 and carried by a recipient mare, Kittennish was bred with a specific purpose. Her bloodlines—those that make pedigrees read like poetry—contain all the right qualities. From her dam, Show Biz Kitty, came a lineage of champions such as Rollz Royce, Cold Shot Kitty, and All Spice. From her sire, Hottish, came that distinctive quickness, cow sense, and drive that define the elite few.
“Show Biz Kitty had already raised a few good ones,” Billy Wolf recalls. “And Kittennish looked like she might be the best yet.”
From the beginning, the tall, lanky filly carried herself with a quiet kind of confidence—an elegance that would later transform into power, precision, and purpose.
When Kittennish was just a 2-year-old, it was Royce Stallcup who had the reins, helping shape the raw talent that would one day make history. From the very beginning, Royce knew there was something different about the young mare. “She was extra,” Stallcup said with a grin, a mix of admiration and respect in his voice. Extra quick, extra smart, and extra opinionated. Kittennish had grit in her eyes and try in her heart, the kind that makes a trainer both cuss and grin in the same breath. She had that rare spark, an eagerness to learn paired with an intensity that couldn’t be taught. Royce’s early guidance gave Kittennish the foundation she needed to rise to her full potential, setting the stage for the remarkable partnership that would follow with Austin Shepard.
“She is really athletic, and she likes her job,” Shepard said with a chuckle. “She’s big for a cutter, but she’s got the desire. She does things other horses can’t do—and don’t want to do. She’s just a physical freak.”
Her debut at the NCHA Metallic Cat Championship Futurity made that clear. Kittennish performed with poise beyond her years, showing the mind of a seasoned mare in a young horse’s frame.
“She felt like a seasoned 5-year-old,” Shepard said. “There’s just no ceiling with her. She doesn’t run out of gears.”
Training a Champion
Training Kittennish requires balance, not bravado. Shepard doesn’t drill her to exhaustion—because he doesn’t have to.
“She can do more than most cow horses,” he explained. “If she ever went as fast as she could go, there’s not a cow in Texas that could keep up.”
Her program is built on finesse: keeping her mind sharp, her body sound, and her confidence high. Fierce in the pen but gentle in the barn, Kittennish is known for her charm and personality. She’s quick to nicker for attention, often rattling her stall chains to make sure nobody forgets she’s there.
“It’s her way of saying, ‘Hey, I’m over here!’” Wolf laughs. “She’s always had that spark.”
That spark—equal parts intelligence and attitude—is what makes her such a formidable competitor. She knows when it’s showtime, and when it is, she turns it on.
Big Moments, Bright Lights
Every horse has their defining moments—the runs that etch their names into the sport’s story. For Kittennish, there have already been several.
In 2024, she qualified for The Run for a Million Cutting Challenge. It’s a one-run, all-or-nothing format where the smallest mistake can cost everything. Under the lights of Las Vegas, she was flawless. Calm. Electric. Commanding. When the dust settled, she was crowned Champion.
“With her, you don’t have to take big chances,” Shepard said. “If you get three clean cuts and the cows cooperate, she’ll do the rest.”
Her momentum didn’t stop there. In 2025, she added Reserve Champion at The American Performance Horseman, where she also helped her team secure the overall victory. Later that summer, she shared the Co-Champion title in the NCHA Summer Cutting Spectacular Open Classic Challenge—proof that her consistency wasn’t luck, but legacy in motion.
“She thrives under pressure,” Shepard said. “The louder the crowd, the sharper she gets. She feeds off it.”
And sometimes, that spark comes from home.
“Kamryn’s loud enough to get anybody ready,” Shepard grinned, referring to his daughter-in-law. “Kittennish hears her, and it’s game on.”
For Wolf, watching those moments unfold has been surreal.
“I’ve owned a lot of great horses,” he said, “but she’s a horse of a lifetime. She’s the kind you hope to have just once.”
The Million-Dollar Milestone
When Kittennish crossed the $1 million mark in late 2025, it wasn’t just another line in the record books—it was a moment that stopped time in the cutting world. She became the first mare in history to reach that milestone in Limited Aged Event competition, and in doing so, she carried with her the hopes, sweat, and dreams of everyone who believed in her.
For Austin Shepard and Billy Wolf, it wasn’t about the money. It was about every long hour spent in the saddle, every ounce of trust built in silence, and every moment she gave her all when it mattered most. “She’s my favorite,” Wolf said softly, emotion catching in his voice. “And I owe it all to Austin—and to her. It’s an honor to own her.” In that milestone, they saw more than a champion; they saw the heart of a mare who refused to be ordinary.
A Legacy in Motion
At just 6 years old, Kittennish’s story is still being written. She already has four foals on the ground and more to come, each carrying her intelligence, balance, and boldness.
“She can cover 15 to 20 feet in one move,” Wolf said. “If I could mold them all like that, I would.”
Shepard added, “She doesn’t have any weaknesses. She’s sound, loves her job, and is physically gifted. She just does it all.”
When asked if any horse in history compares, Shepard pauses. “She’s kind of like Secretariat,” he said. “Tall and lanky at first, then she grew into herself. Once she figured it out, it was just about keeping her healthy.”
In the Heart of a Mare, Legends Are Made
Kittennish isn’t just a champion—she’s a partner, a teammate, and a reflection of what’s possible when talent meets trust.
For Austin Shepard, she’s the kind of horse that defines a career.
For Billy Wolf, she’s proof that passion and patience can produce greatness.
