AQHA World Show

Completed

  • Oct. 30-Nov. 19
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

By the time the news broke of the outbreak on Nov. 18, a majority of the AQHA World Show classes had already been completed and horses were already on their way home. AQHA released this statement on their social media channels:

“AQHA is aware of a possible equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy outbreak from recent events in Texas. AQHA always recommends following good biosecurity practices when traveling with your horses. Best practices for preventing EHM transmission include minimizing horse-to-horse contact and exposure to aerosolized nasal discharge or contaminated surfaces including clothing, people, buckets and barn items as well as disinfecting surfaces and equipment that may have come into contact with infected horses.”

NCHA Futurity

Ongoing

  • Nov. 10-Dec. 6
  • Fort Worth, Texas

The NCHA Futurity is continuing to proceed with updated protocols regarding biosecurity measures. The NCHA released this statement:

“The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) is fully aware of the recent Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1/EHM) outbreak affecting parts of Texas. First and foremost, the health and safety of our equine athletes, competitors, and the entire community is our top priority.

We are actively monitoring the situation and are in direct consultation with leading veterinarians and the Texas Animal Health Commission. The reported strain is highly aggressive, and we are following expert advice and state protocols to mitigate risks.

In response, the NCHA is implementing the following measures for the World Championship Futurity:
– All attendees are encouraged to implement temperature monitoring of all horses upon arrival and twice daily during their stay.
– Immediate isolation and veterinary assessment for any horse presenting a fever or respiratory/neurological symptoms.
– Enhanced disinfection protocols for shared spaces and equipment.
– Strict controls on horse-to-horse contact and avoidance of communal water and feed sources.
– Full cooperation with state and local authorities for ongoing tracing and containment efforts.

We urge all participants to closely monitor their horses for:
– Early signs of fever, nasal discharge, cough, or neurological symptoms.
-Any abnormal behavior or difficulty in movement should be reported to event officials and a veterinarian immediately.

NCHA remains committed to transparent, ongoing communication as the situation evolves. Further updates will be provided to all participants as more guidance from veterinary and state officials becomes available.”

NRHA Futurity

Delayed

  • Nov. 24-Dec. 6
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

In an official release, the NRHA announced a revised schedule for the NRHA Futurity, with move-in—limited to Futurity horses only—rescheduled for Nov. 27, and Futurity classes set to begin on Nov. 29.

The North American Affiliate Championships (NAAC) will be rescheduled for a later date.

There is still no statement on if the NRHA Futurity Sale (set to run Dec. 4) will be delayed or cancelled.

“The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is unwavering in its commitment to the health and welfare of every horse participating in our events. After continued consultation with the State Veterinarians of Oklahoma and Texas and a careful review of the evolving Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) situation, NRHA will delay the start of the NRHA Futurity, with move in to begin on Nov. 27.

This will comply with the scientific guidelines for reducing the risk of EHV, which has a 2-10-day incubation period.

Plans to reschedule this year’s Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships (NAAC) are under way and will be communicated soon. Only Futurity horses will be allowed on the grounds to reduce the risk of exposure and horse concentration.

Ongoing

  • Dec. 5-7
  • Plaza Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

With guidance from state vets and the Nevada Department of Agriculture, the Cowboy Town Showdown is still planned to begin Dec. 5 with increased health paperwork requirements of horse owners.

“We understand how concerning neurologic EHV-1 is for every horse owner. We are committed to being transparent, to follow veterinary guidance to the letter, and to providing a safe environment without fueling unnecessary panic or disruption. We will not compromise horse welfare, and we will communicate promptly if any recommendations change.”
