Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, a place better known for skyscrapers than show pens, I never imagined horses would become such a huge part of my life. Before joining IHSA, I had very little experience in the equine industry. Taking a chance on something completely new at Black Hawk College ended up shaping not only my college experience, but also my confidence, work ethic, and future goals.
Finding Horses Through IHSA
Joining the IHSA Western team changed everything for me. What started as stepping outside of my comfort zone quickly turned into memories and experiences I will cherish forever. IHSA gave me opportunities I never thought I would have—from learning the basics to competing alongside incredibly talented riders from all over the country. It’s such a unique environment where effort and attitude matter just as much as experience, and for me, that’s what made it all so special.
Last year, I had the opportunity to compete on the national championship team as the beginner rider, an experience that still feels surreal. As someone who had never shown before IHSA, it was a pivotal moment for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my coaches, Rebekah Irish and Olivia Henning. Their support, patience, and belief in me from the very beginning have meant everything, and they’ve played such a huge role in helping me grow into the rider I am today.
Competing at the 2026 IHSA National Championship
Coming back to IHSA Nationals in 2026 felt completely different in the best way. This year, I competed individually and earned third place in the Beginner division, something I’m incredibly thankful for. Our team also placed third overall, and I could not be prouder of the group I got to be part of. Every single person showed up, dug deep, and made the experience unforgettable.
The Best Memories Happened Outside the Show Pen
Honestly, some of my favorite memories from this year had nothing to do with the actual competition. They came from the people. Whether it was random speed-walking competitions with riders and coaches from other teams before the parade of teams, or watching both Black Hawk College and the University of Findlay teams speed-walk back to their groups during awards, those were the moments that made us all thankful to be exactly where we were. It may sound insignificant, but my abs are still recovering from laughing so hard.
Why IHSA Means So Much to Me
That’s what makes IHSA so special to me. It’s not just about placings—it’s about the people, the teamwork, and getting to watch all of your hard work pay off on a big stage. Everyone plays a role, and every ride matters. Being part of a group that is so supportive and driven makes the experience even more meaningful.
This year reminded me why I love IHSA so much. It’s not just about ribbons or titles—it’s about the experiences and memories you carry with you long after the show is over. It’s about pushing yourself, being adaptable, and appreciating every opportunity you’re given. It’s the early mornings, the nerves before you walk into the pen, the friendships, the laughter, and the feeling of accomplishing something bigger than yourself.
For someone who came into IHSA with almost no horse experience, I never could have imagined where this journey would take me. And honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
