This video is brought to you by Absorbine.

Brad Barkemeyer’s Tips for the Show Pen Video Series:

Our friends at Absorbine bring you this video featuring Professional Horseman, Brad Barkemeyer. Barkemeyer gives you expert tips on refining speed transitions, and how to be aware of your energy. This skill is all about effectively communicating with your horse—using your energy, cues, and guidance to ask for a change in speed, whether speeding up or slowing down.

To build a solid foundation, Barkemeyer emphasizes starting at a slow pace with consistent repetition before gradually increasing speed at different gaits. He begins by allowing his horse the freedom to walk however fast he would like. Barkemeyer notes he is simply observing as a passenger. As the horse gains confidence, he gradually introduces more cues. However, it’s crucial to stay mindful of the energy you’re transferring and how your body language influences your horse’s response.
